THE SECOND DECADE 1939-1949
Compiled by Desmond Koopman

1.     PRINCIPAL: W.H. HAYTER M.A. (1941-1943)

W.H. Hayter served as the principal of Good Hope Training School during some of the most  difficult years of World War II (1939-1945). During his term of office three significant features were introduced: a school bulletin “Our Magazine” was started; a Parent-Teacher Association was launched and Our School Song was adopted.

On the 4th May 1941 with the inauguration of the first Parent-Teacher Association its secretary Mrs E.K. Cerfontyne wrote “The object of the association is to foster closer co-operation between parents and teachers in providing the best education for our children.”

In 1943 Our School Song was introduced with the words penned by the staff in collaboration and music by M.L. de Villiers B.A., the composer of “Die Stem van Suid Afrika.” The school motto “DUTY DEMANDS SERVICE” featured in the school song.

2.     PRINCIPAL GEORGE J. GLASS (1944-47)

Staff members included Mr and Mrs Glass; Mrs E.K. Cerfontyne; Charlie Africa;  Winston Sampson; Jannie Theron; recent graduates George Beyers, Ingram du Preez, Eddie May and Willie Turner.  D.M. Swaine and J.D. Harcombe were the theology lecturers.  The Fortunes of Athlone were in charge of the boarders in the old farm house.

George Glass, a former State forester, was a practical man who did much to improve the campus by planting eucalyptus trees along the perimeter on Seventh Avenue and erecting a security fence around the property.  After this the principal with the assistance of the students built up and levelled the low lying eastern side of the premises bordering the Elsies Kraal River to prevent the flooding of the playing fields  in the Cape winter. Next the east wing of the school building was constructed adding three more classrooms for Good Hope.
